A technical interview is a must for any post which involves the intrinsic knowledge of a particular subject. When you have to specialize in a particular field, your employer will want to test your familiarity with the subject before hiring you. The good thing about a technical interview is that it is generally the final step in the selection process. So if you’re being called for one, your chances of being selected are quite high as it is. But there will still be a few competitors, whom you will need to beat.
So what is the trick to crack a technical interview? Do you need to prepare in the same way as you do for a normal interview? Well, here are some tips to help you along your way.
Be clear with your words
Think of this as your first lecture in a classroom. You expect the teacher to be clear in what he or she is saying. In the same vein, you are trying to explain your knowledge on the subject to another person. You must be clear in your head with what you want to convey. Only then will you be able to state your point clearly and effectively.
You might also want to ask questions to your hiring manager. Some of the best questions that hiring managers have come across are:

- What is the question you all really want to ask me but haven’t?

- Where do you see the company going in the next 10 years?
- What impact would I have on the team if I got hired?
- What would make someone really successful in this role?
Use your resources
When you are talking about the technical subjects, it is imperative that you are ready to practically demonstrate what you know. Practical examples give an idea about your thinking process as well as the fact that you are capable of working at an instant’s notice. Use the laptop, whiteboard or whatever is closest to you to demonstrate your knowledge.
An interviewee used his research as a resource and confidently placed the question before the hiring committee, “I was looking at your social media presence and I can see that your brands have been more active over the past few months. Has your strategy changed?”
Don’t Make Assumptions
Assumptions are pitfalls. You should not be making any assumptions. That is another reason why you must ask questions. If you are making assumptions, make only the most obvious and logical ones. Explain what assumption you’re making and why that assumption is relevant to the scenario presented to you.
Take your time
Any practical problem needs a certain application of mind. Even then it is not necessary that you will find the solution. But take your time on the problem. Never once give up or say that you don’t know. Keep trying as it shows your dedication towards problem solving. An employee who is ready to work when facing a dead end is certainly very valuable to any firm.
Involve the interviewers
Make the interviewers feel that they are part of the problem solving. The way to do this is to keep talking. Taking their opinion may be good on some topics, but what you really should be doing is discussing your ideas. If you feel one method is better than the other, tell them why. I suggest that you should always choose the easiest methods, where possibilities of having a discussion are higher.
Technical interview is considered to be a hassle, but frankly, it is more of a personal conversation than an evaluation. If you can present your ideas clearly and show your dedication to work for the team, you have a great chance of getting hired. But remember, the interview is a stage where you need to work on your communication skills. Communication is the key.
